Hello,
My name is Kiwi and I would like some help creating a map. This will be my very first map creation.
I've already gathered some research on tips and tricks on how to create a map and gotten familier with the Emprie Earth world builder.
The map I'm trying to build features a large area of the actual world, and I want it to look much as the real world as possible, so that land and sea are the actual same sizes. I found several old forum posts giving me links to websites, which let me select a portion of the world map, than the site let's me download the information of the map portion I just selected so it can be recreated in the game using an elevation file. However I encoutered several problems with this:
The original forum post (http://ee.heavengames.com/new/eeh/mapdesign/elevation.shtml), has two links in them to maps where you can select particular grids, one of which doesn't work, the other one also doesn't work but redirects me to this link: maps.ngdc.noaa.gov/viewers/wcs-client/. I've used this map to select the grid I need.
The guide also stated that I would have to download the information from this map in .bin format and than manually change it to .dat after I downloaded it by simply typing in .dat as extension. However, I am only able to download the information I need from this map in .fit, .grd, .nc or .asc(ascII) (there is also a XYZ option which doesn't seem to be working).
I've tried googling on how to convert these to .bin or .dat, but came up empty. Other online converters simply had a to small box to paste the entire files information in and also due to the size of the information, my browser crashed several times trying to do so.
I went looking for a different world map that let's me select a grid and I found this: maps9.navit-project.org/, this did let me download in .bin, so that's what I did, however the files size was 12,5GB, which is allot and after I changed it to .dat, than opened the elevation file ingame, my game simply crashed (I think this is because the file is simply very large).
Anyway the point is, I really want to make this map and as realistic as possible. Is there any way to do what I want to do, or is there a different world map that let's me select a grid and than download the information from it that I need? I really hope someone here is able to help me, thank you .
Dear regards,
Kiwi
