Hello forum. I've used elevation map data before. It's very handy but sometimes far too detailed. I need specific sized map areas for custom multiplayer scenarios. In the official German Campaign there is the WW2 scenario - Lightning Warfare. This somewhat gave me inspiration for creating a multiplayer WW1 scenario for instance with: the British, the French, the Germans, and Neutral Powers. The custom map would need some of: England, France, Germany. It would be nice to have as little of neighbouring neutral powers as possible. One website I found - www.ncei.noaa.gov/maps/grid-extract/ - I am not sure what setting to select. Please bare in mind I do not want them too highly detailed if possible, just enough of a nation outline to clearly represent the nation in game. As sometimes these elevation data maps are too detailed with precision. Some website I once uncovered claimed to have generated a map from a photo image file. I think the person had drawn the map in some image editing software and imported that data into the game. I am unaware of this process, but it sounds very interesting indeed. I'm not an expert with the scenario editor but I have used it to create custom multiplayer scenarios before. So there quality only goes so far, but it's having fun what truly matters. Some multiplayer scenario ideas:Europe, WW1: British (human), French (human), Germans human), Neutral Powers (computer). British Isles, Middle Ages: England (human), Scotland (human), Wales (human), Ireland (computer). Saxons, Vikings, Normans (alternative history): Saxons (human), Vikings (human), Normans (human).

I have never actually tried using elevation data since the maps usually end up looking weird (in my opionion from the maps I have downloaded). The map looks great on the mini-map, but is not really playable due to mountains destroying the landscape. I have seen several guides and posts on elevation maps on EEH and in here. Edit: For example sotyscndesign.proboards.com/thread/1186/elevation-files-work-empire-earth

Thanks for the reply. So all your maps are hand-made? I struggle at times with hand crafting maps, often the water areas looking off. Is there any procedure you do to over come this? For instance, I was to make southern England and Normandy for the D-Day landings, for instance. What steps would you do to hand craft this?

I usually just find a map of the specific area and when create the map from that. Just to be clear I think elevation map is a great foundation to create maps from.

Yeah, that would be the fastest. My suggestion though is not to fret too much about the accuracy of the map: playability always trumps map design, meaning as long as the scenario is really fun to play with, any inaccuracy or imperfection with the map will almost, always be overlooked!

playability always trumps map design Yeah you're right. 👍🏻 I have many ideas which 'could' work, but my issue is executing them. 😂
